The Importance of Pediatric Sealants

At Kids First Dentistry we know that the health of a child's teeth can play a big role in his or her overall health. That is why our team of skilled professionals take child dentistry seriously. We offer a wide range of services at our two locations in Fairfield and Norwalk, CT. While good oral hygiene is the best and most effective preventative measure against cavities, there are times when additional treatments may be required.

What Are Sealants?

A child's mouth is full of hidden places where bacteria can grow and thrive. Regular brushing and flossing may not do enough to get in to the hard-to-reach areas in the back of the mouth. This can make it a challenge to adequately clean the spots that are most susceptible to cavities. Leaving bacteria on the teeth can cause the following problems:

  • Bacteria reacts with food in the mouth, creating acids.
  • The acids break down fragile tooth enamel.
  • Cavities form where tooth enamel has eroded away.

Our doctors often choose to utilize sealants as an added level of protection. This resin material is generally applied to premolars and molars, but can also be used on teeth that are simply more difficult to get clean.
