How Playing Dress Up Can Help Excite Your Child for Their Next VisitThinking back on your childhood, you probably don't remember a trip to your dentist's office as a fond memory. It's not commonly viewed as a fun time, and we want to change that for your child.

The feelings of anxiety and stress associated with dental checkups, having cavities filled and other procedures are completely normal. There are ways to ease that stress, however, and playing dress up is one of them.

“My Turn to be the Dentist!"

If your child is experiencing dread at the mention of visiting our office, we have a few ideas you can try at home. Children learn through play, they see adults in the world around them and they play-act out the everyday chores and life they see around them. It's a great coping mechanism when something is scary or new, being able to dress up or 'be' that scary thing helps them break the experience down into manageable pieces. Visiting the dentist can be fun!

Especially if it's a game you've been playing at home! Your child may play dress up and don a fire hat and jacket, racing around the house and 'saving' everyone from a very potentially scary situation, a house fire. They are excited about visiting the fire house and seeing the trucks, and playing dentist at home can bring the same results!

Stock your dress up area with an oversized white button up shirt that can double as a lab coat. Include some 'tools' like a hand mirror, tongue depressors, cotton balls and even a toothbrush, floss or other child friendly devices. Spend some time with your child role playing and pretending that you're visiting the dentist. Take turns being the dentist, the assistant and the patient. When you and your child explore oral health together, the fear is minimized and a trip to visit us becomes an adventure!
