|Toddlers can be picky, finicky eaters, and getting them to eat the right foods can sometimes be a challenge. Not only are they physically growing at the speed of light, they are developing mentally and emotionally as well, and the right foods can nourish them as they grow. Today we're going to look at some of the foods that can improve their oral health.
Good Nutrition Means Good Oral Health
Good nutrition is one of the essential building blocks for building a healthy life, including good oral health. A well-balanced diet with plenty of proteins, produce and dairy will help your child in the long run.
Lean proteins like chicken, fish, beans, nuts and beef are important in the diet of a toddler.
Encourage them to eat plenty of protein at each meal. Cheese cubes, especially cheddar cheese, are not only easy for toddlers to grab and eat, they are packed full of calcium. Other aged cheeses such as Monterey jack and swiss are good additions to your child's diet.
Another snacking staple comes from the produce aisle. Pears, apples, celery, carrots, cucumbers and melons are great food items that not only encourage saliva production, they are nutrient dense and filled with vitamins.
It is important to remember that mealtimes should be fun, and not battlegrounds. If you have a picky toddler, try making some of the above-mentioned foods available for midday snacking. Cutting food into little pieces and placing it in a segmented tray down on a level where it can be reached may encourage your child to come and try something new. Remember, be flexible, these picky phases generally pass with time, but the good nutritional habits that we instill in our children can last a lifetime.
