How Reading Can Improve Your Child's Understanding of the Dentist

Dental anxiety in children is not uncommon and we are prepared to help you as you help your child with this discomfort. Often times, we find that anxiety or uncertainty can be eased simply by reading books with your child. Books about dentistry can help your child understand not only what we do at our office, but what they can do at home to help make their visit with us uneventful.
Understanding The Dentist
Many times if a child is fearful of something it can be related to the fact that they are facing the unknown and are unsure of how to react. Reading books with your child about what to expect from the dentist and how to properly care for their own oral health at home can greatly increase their understanding of dentistry and thus ease their fear a little.
If you have younger children who are fearful, you may find that reading colorful books coupled with simple role playing together may help them understand what to expect from our office. Older children benefit greatly from reading real photo non-fiction books about dentistry. The honest photos and technical language can help them understand and learn about their own oral health and what to expect from a visit to our office.
In our office, we have several books for children in our waiting room, as well as a list of recommended books for various ages of children. If you would like to stop by and visit our waiting room as a 'practice' visit with your child, please do! You may read some of the books together and we are happy to answer any questions that you (or your child) may have.
Please do not hesitate to call our office with any concerns you may have about dental anxiety, we are happy to accommodate your child in any way that we can. We look forward to hearing from you.
