Crooked (misaligned) teeth, can have a serious impact on your life. They can affect the everyday tasks that your teeth perform, such as allowing you to eat and speak. They can lead to serious oral health problems, such as pain in your temporomandibular joint (a condition known as TMJ disorder). They can leave you more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. Misaligned teeth can also greatly impact your smile and your confidence. At Kids First Pediatric Dentistry, we can fix your misaligned teeth with braces.

What are Braces?

Braces have been used for years to treat misaligned teeth (and misaligned jaws). They consist of three main components:
•  Metal brackets. The brackets are bonded to the front surface of each tooth during your first visit. They stay in place throughout the duration of your treatment.
•  Metal bands. Metal bands are attached to each of your back teeth. They are placed to anchor the archwires in place.
•  Archwires. These wires are attached to each of the brackets with the help of elastic O-rings. These rings are available in multiple colors, which allow you to customize the look of your braces if you wish. The archwires are available in different sizes and are frequently changed. We start with thinner wires first, then move up to thicker ones to achieve the desired results.

There are also other components that may be added, depending upon your specific circumstances. These may include such things as headgear, springs, hooks, loops and rubber bands.

How Braces Work

Braces work to gradually move your teeth into proper alignment. The archwire is the component responsible for the movement, and stabilization of your teeth. The wires place pressure on your teeth, which then place pressure on the periodontal ligaments (the structures that hold your teeth in place). The ligaments are widened, which loosens your teeth. The wires then guide your teeth to where they need to go. Once in proper alignment, your braces hold your teeth securely in place to stabilize. It takes about three days for bone remodeling to begin. It takes three months for new tissues to begin to grow, and about a full year for your teeth to stabilize in their new positions.

Benefits of Braces

There are several benefits of braces:
•  With perfectly straight teeth, your smile is enhanced.
•  Your oral health is improved. Crooked teeth increase your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease. When your teeth are properly aligned, they are easier to care for.
•  Elimination of jaw pain. Misaligned teeth (or a misaligned jaw) can cause serious jaw pain (a condition known as TMJ disorder). Properly aligned teeth can also eliminate uneven wear on your teeth.
•  Your digestion is improved. You will be able to properly chew your food. Chewing is the first stage of digestion, breaking down your food. This allows your body to easily access essential nutrients. With better digestion, your overall nutrition will improve.
•  With straight teeth, and an enhanced smile, you will gain a boost of confidence. You will not be able to help but show off your smile.

If crooked teeth are affecting your life, braces may be able to help. Contact Kids First Pediatric Dentistry today to find out how.
